Setting Up a Section Break Before Adding Page Numbers, Table of Contents and Cover Page
Video of this step is at the bottom of the page
You will need to add a section break to your document so that page numbering on different sections of the document is performed correctly. This will enable you to have the first page of your text be page number 1 and your cover page and table of contents be numbered separately.
Create a Section Break to Create Sections in Your Paper:
On your first page, place your cursor at the top of the page.
Create a New Page before the text by holding down your CTRL key and hit enter.
Select the Page Layout tab.
Place your cursor at the beginning of your text where you want to start a new section.
Select the Breaks option in the ribbon. (If your document isn't wide enough, you may just see the icon instead of text.)
Select Next Page in the Section Breaks area.
*You can create section breaks after numbering the pages, creating the table of contents and creating the cover page. I have had issues with it for some reason so I recommend doing it first.
