Earth Day is always observed on April 22. International Earth Day is celebrated on the March equinox (more about International Earth Day below).

To call attention to the environment.
History of Earth Day:
- Former U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson was Earth Day's co-founder.
- The first Earth Day was in April 22, 1970.
- Senator Nelson got the name after reading about San Fransisco's Earth Day celebration which was held on March 21, 1970.
Observance of Earth Day:
International Earth Day
- International Earth Day is said to be the original Earth Day and celebrated on the March equinox (March 20-21).
- The UN peace bell is rang three times to mark the day and a minute of silence is followed.
- John McConnell was the founder of Earth Day and was supported by UN Secretary-General U Thant. The first International Earth Day celebration on March 21, 1971.
